Overall not impressed with Leaside Revera assisted living

Visit ok this week.

I do visit weekly to check on things. Not many residents have family that can visit.

As I have stated in the past, I do not blame the front line workers for the lack of continuity of care, consistency of care and the goal to provide excellence in care especially in the personal care needs of residents.

This should and must be driven by the leadership team, and clearly isn’t

for example

  1. fall rates are not reported to residents or family members
  2. safety checks on equipment and function of rented rooms not donetheir cop out? as they do not provide any of the equipment its not their responsibility to make sure it is safely maintained
  3. striving for excellence in person and family centred care. Never have I received a satisfaction survey on my thoughts of care

Only letters i receive are bills requesting to pay more for less.

Leaside Revera Assisted Living Units – Not Impressed with Care when considering Cost of Care

Hello,

I have noticed some increased activity on my blog which is wonderful to see.

My goal is to inform other families before they decide on Leaside Revera – assisted living units and provide a outlet to vent my dissatisfaction as a coping mechanism.

Please note I am not commenting on the apartment living section, but the section where there are dining rooms on each floor, most residents here are either wheelchair bound or need significant personal care.

I also will answer any questions, and if you want to make a comment about your experience at Leaside positive or negative with your consent I will post it. I am an excellent navigator for elder care and can trouble shoot through most situations.

I am sure there are many with positive experiences at Leaside Revera. Wish I was one of these families.

My goal is to warn residents and family that the care is minimal, and if financially able to have your loved one have an excellent care experience, you will have to provide extra care daily to keep loved ones safe and cared for.  Care ranges from monthly from just under 5000 to I suspect over 8000 a month.

If a resident or family is on a budget, you will be disappointed in the cost of care and the level of care you receive and because you probably have no extra funds to higher extra care, you will soon see the lack of quality care.

The Leadership at this Leaside Revera is substandard.  Be warned.

Look at other facilities before you make your choice. Even another Revera (as they seem to own most retirement home spaces) may be better than Leaside Revera.  My dissatisfaction is with this site alone and its leadership team who guide the care.

If private assisted living is a bridge to Long term Care…do your papers Asap, do not wait. LTC wait lists are long.

The care teams RN, RPN, personal support workers vary from looking pissed off and not engaged…today one looked right at me in xxx room but never said hello, but just glared at me. There are some care workers who do care and seem engaged but they are few and far between.

Leaside Revera doesn’t believe in continuity of care, as most are moved around to other units every 3-6 months from what I see. The care member may move to another unit to join a better team…I suspect xxx is on a problem unit where the team doesn’t work together and is more toxic that others.

How do I know this? I listen to how they chat to each other and engage with residents in general.  Not many happy team members on the unit.

Erin Robinson Charlene Parish Michael Wright use caution when trusting this leadership team at Leaside Revera

I will make no excuses for my opinions about the Erin Robinson, Charlene Parish and Michael Wright.

These are the 3 key people who benefit on the profit margins of providing substandard care but have not issues in increasing prices for vulnerable residents.

Their strategy that is consistent with these 3 is to ignore concerns raised by family members of residents.

I have experienced this from all 3. Michael Wright is the worst of the 3. He will not respond to any emails or letters written to him.

Charlene Parish is a sly and dishonest person, who thinks that saying “sorry” fixes substandard care and safety issues. She lacks the skills to do her job properly.

Erin Robinson will communicate with you via email and offer to meet with you, but as soon as you say lets meet, the communication stops.

Be warned of their unprofessional behaviour.

Not impressed by Leaside Revera Service Level based on Pricing

Visit week of April 18 2016, same as usual. Did my tidy up, changed pillow lines which gets neglected and organized clean and dirty clothes.

Funding levels for a complete shower or bath by Ontario funded home care or provincially funded long term care facilities equates to on average 1 full shower a week.

Granted most elderly people do not need full showers daily as it could harm skin integrity, but a gentle shower twice a week is an reasonable option especially if one is incontinent.

Base care rates at Revera are higher than the cost to have a bath by CCAC or in long term care, but they only xxx once a week, but the cost to pay for the care is double or triple of that of government funded care.  So who is profiting?

Rest assured it is not the front line team members who care for the residents.

Management are reaping the benefits of this. Should one be getting better personal care if one is paying for it privately?  Would it harm Leaside to give each resident a bath twice a week?

Florence Nightingale in Notes on Nursing speaks to the care of the skin and there is best evidence that care of the skin improves health outcomes.

Do I think that Leaside Revera and the management know or care about this data?

No, never, not likely.  Their caring point comes from profit margins.

Not impressed with Leaside Revera

Visit week of April 11 2016. Same old stuff, clothes not taken out of laundry bag, left in dirty clothes with food stains.

Medicine cups and old water cups just laying around.

Light bulb in washroom still not replaced.

Please remember every 4 months there will be a reassessment of the care needs of your loved one…this is an oppourtunity for them to jack up prices…so you could technically see your monthly fees go up 4 times a year.

This is fine for:

  1. residents who have total care there probably a max somewhere for total care residents
  2. if you have millions to pay for basic care and hire private care on top

Leaside Revera is not for a person or family member on a budget.

If you do need private care to bridge to a LTC government bed…then find another facility and stay away from Leaside

Who Leaside Revera is suited for

Hello Again,

My blog to date has been about my experience with xxx.

We are on a fixed income and do not have 100s of thousands of dollars to spend on healthcare per year factoring xxx could live to be 100 years of age or older.

This facility will suit a person(s)/family where in my:

  1. Money is not a concern
  2. You can augment private care to have someone check in with loved one several days a week or daily such as a companion. They can do sundry tiding and shopping as needed.
  3. Your loved ones care needs are not very complex

Hope this helps.

Comments, questions and feedback welcome evaluating the care experience at Leaside Revera

Hello Again,

I started this blog in July 2015 as a way to cope with my own disappointment in the ratio between the basic costs of care at Leaside Revera and the level of care service provided.

As mentioned in the last post I do encourage others to comment on their experience.

I have had 1 comment posted for review, it was a negative one with some interesting comments about Charlene Parish,  but because the person did not email back to consent to posting their comments, I have chosen no to share it.

I am a great common sense person, fairly reasonable and know a great deal about health care systems, so all questions are welcome.

Visit w/o April 4th:

Quiet weekend…did my usual tidy up, changed dirty pillow cases. Reported light bulbs out in bath area.

weekly visits needed to keep on top of loved one’s care needs

If you can visit loved one weekly.  For most families have hired private caregivers to do this work. xxx cannot afford this on top of over 5000.00 in basic care.

sometimes xxx is left in dirty clothes because they can’t bother to hang up and sort laundry – i did the unpacking of laundry, tidied up room.

pillow case 3 weeks old not changed but xxx was not in good spirits this visit so I left him to rest in bed after I did my routine chores
